GEHL BEST IN WISSOTA LATE MODEL MAIN PDF Print E-mail

Todd Gehl's racing this summer has been sporadic at best but Sunday night at the Proctor

Speedway he swept the action against a stout field of WISSOTA Late Models. After a heat win,

Gehl started the 20 lap feature on the outside of the front row next to Terry Lillo. Gehl got the

hole shot and moved to the high side, a groove he never gave up on.

A first lap caution got a rare Tim McMann spin in the fourth turn slowed the action, but, when the green flag appeared Gehl

again headed top side and ran like the #2D was on rails. Lillo battled for second with Kyle

Peterlin, Harry Hanson, Bobby Carlson, Darrell Nelson and Darin Meierotto. Hanson won the

battle moved to second and set out in pursuit of Gehl. Hanson closed on Gehl while being chased

by Peterlin. Nelson was catching Carlson for fifth while Hanson was a car length back of Gehl.

At the half way point Hanson was clinging to the tail of Gehl. Then it was Peterlin, Lillo, Bobby

Carlson, Nelson, Meierotto and Don Copp. Gehl used traffic to keep Hanson at bay as Hanson

tried the bottom in an effort to gain ground but got bottled up by lapped cars running down there.

Gehl was never really threatened as he completed the sweep over Hnason, Peterlin, Nelson and

Meierotto in the top five.

Paul Schultz jumped to the lead from the pole in the 20 lap WISSOTA Modified feature but

his front row mate Jody Bellefeuille dived to the bottom and grabbed the lead off turn four as Jeff

broking moved in to battle with Schultz for the runner up spot. The top three moved ahead of

fourth place Greg Chesley by several car lengths with Duane Dale running in fifth. Bellefeuille

broke free and extended his lead. Further back Darrell Nelson ran in 12th after a heat race

breakdown put him 19th and last in the starting order. Chesley and Jeff Broking battled for third

and Chesley took the spot as the mid point was reached. Schultz was in pursuit of Bellefuille but

was not gaining any ground as he was momentarily trapped behind a lapped car. Just before the

white flag was about to wave the one and only caution of the event flew for Dale who got turned

around in turn four. On the restart it was Bellefeuille maintaining the lead over Schultz, Chesley,

Ryan Aho, Jeff Broking, Kelly Estey and Nelson in seventh. Schultz tried for the lead but could

not make the pass on the restart and fell back into the clutches of Chesley. The two battled for

second and Bellefeuille was long gone by six car lengths as the checkered flag flew. Chesley took

second, Schultz third, Aho fourth and Jeff Broking fifth. It was Bellefeuille's first win of the

season at Proctor and second of the season.

To say the least there was a mess at the start of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature as three or

four cars tangled on the front stretch. Jay Kuras, Kevin Salin and Todd Gillitzer collided heavily

as cars began spinning in the pack. All three cars sustained heavy damage including an apparent

punctured fuel cell in the Kuras machine necessitating a lengthy cleanup delay. What followed

was a series of aborted tries at restarting the 21 car field as well as another caution flag after only

one of 20 laps were complete. When they were able string more than one lap together it was Jeff

Ruzich who managed to take the lead though he had plenty of company with Jay Kintner, Mike

Bellefeuille, Louis Megen and Jeremy fink in close attendance. Zach Wohlers and Jeff Tardy

lurked just outside the top five. The caution lights blinked on again when Scott Heikkinen went

off the back stretch and stalled. At this point the 22 car field was whittled down to 15 and

Kintner got the jump on Ruzich at the green flag. At the half way mark Kintner was cruising by

ten car lengths and had no trouble taking the win as he was never challenged over the last ten

circuits. Finishing behind Kintner in the top five were Ruzich, Bellefeuille, Tardy and Fink.

20 laps of Midwest Modified action sputtered to a halt on the first lap when several cars

crossed up in the first turn. All cars drove away but Jimmy Latvala had to give up his third row

starting spot to restart last. Pole sitter Tommy Turcotte got the hole shot on the second try over

Glen Dammer, Adam Archer and Skeeter Este who somehow in one or two laps managed to fly

from 13th to the top five. The charging #37 of Estey was the one to watch as he challenged

Turcotte for the point while Steve Stuart pursued from row five up to the third spot. Just prior to

the half way mark Estey took over the top spot and suddenly the top two in points, Estey and

Stuart were in a battle for the lead. The leaders were soon racing through traffic but that all

disappeared when Turcotte was spun off turn two by Archer with four laps left. It took three tries

to get the field going again but when they did Sturat made a bid for the lead but was held off by

Estey who went on to take his fourth feature win of the season over Stuart, Turcotte, Tridel

Champlin with a good run and Lance Solem in the top five.

Point leader Josh Loucks managed to stave off the pack to win his third feature of the season

and it was not easy as at one point 11 cars were in a pack all wanting that lead. Loucks popped

out of a four wide restart after an early caution, a pack that included Richard Dzelak, Pete

Ciurleo, Chad Carlson and Al Rapp. The action moved quickly to the half way point of the 15 lap

event with Loucks out front and a four car battle behind him for second. Carlson got the second

spot and moved right on Louck's bumper, literally. Loucks led them into lapped traffic which

proved to be a problem. As Loucks tried to get by the lapped car with Carlson on his bumper it

appeared that the third running Rapp got into Carlson who was pushed into Loucks. Carlson spun

from the contact and the caution flew. All were restored to their previous order and Loucks went

on to take his third win of the year. Carlson, Dzelak, Rapp and Dan Larsen rounded out the top

five.
