By Jerry O'Brien Track champions for the 2009 season were named Sunday night at the Proctor Speedway. Of the five divisions only one was decided at the final race of the season. Defending Pure Stock champion Josh Loucks led Al Rapp by just nine points going into the final night's action. A poor performance ion his heat race, a fifth place finish, w race which Rapp won halved Loucks' point lead. A third place finish by Rapp to Loucks' tenth place erased the lead and gave Rapp the track title. No second place runner in the four WISSOTA sanctioned divisions could muster enough points to wrest the title away from the leaders going into the final event. Harry Hanson was named the 2009 WISSOTA Late Model track champion as was Jeff Tardy in the WISSOTA Super Stock division. For the first time a father and son team won track titles in the same season as Kelly Estey won the WISSOTA Modified track title and his son Skeeter Estey won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified title.
The feature for the Midwest Modified division was the first up and Glen Dammer had the pole position and jumped off into the lead at the green flag. Though he could not catch Skeeter Estey for the division title, Steve Stuart continued to be a man on a mission trying to close the gap. Earlier in the evening Stuart had started eighth in his heat and a lap and a quarter in was leading. Several caution flags prevented the field from spreading out and kept Stuart in the hunt. Dammer, in perhaps his best run of the season, kept the lead over Deven Van House, Stuart, Andrew Inman and Dan Kingsley. Stuart stole the lead from Dammer and led a lap but the caution appeared when Van House and Inman clashed and spun off turn one leaving Inman's car over on it's side. Both drivers were OK ans Dtuart retained the lead. The final caution appeared when the door skin came loose from the Estey car with four laps to go. Stuart had little trouble winning his second feature of the season over Dammer, Estey, and Dan Russell and Jimmy Latvala. Scott Lawrence rarely races at the Proctor Speedway anymore but when he does he seems to remember when he was winning championships there. Lawrence started in the fifth row and quickly moved forward as Jay Kuras sneaked by Dan Gullikson for the lead at the initial green flag. Lawrence was quickly up to run third ahead of Nick Oreskovich. The caution flag appeared when the 1L of Donnie Lofdahl suffered front suspension damage and was taken off on the hook. With 13 laps to go Lawrence battled with Kuras for the lead as Gullickson looked for an opening. Again the caution flag kept it close as Pat Heikkinen's car stalled just off turn two. The restart was a no go as Oreskovich got into Gullikson and shed both front fenders and the nose piece bringing out a debris caution. The next try at a restart saw Kuras sail off turn one and the next attempt at a green flag start saw John Massingill and Gullikson tangle on the back stretch as Gullickson's car seemed to be an accident magnet. When a start was finally possible Lawrence drove away to a huge lead and recorded his second feature win of the season. Jay Kintner, Gukkikson, Scott Heikkinen and Zach Wohlers rounded out the top five. Jeff Tardy stayed out of trouble, finished seventh and took home to Hibbing, MN the track Super Stock championship. Kevin Carlson has had a banner season in the #79 Late Model winning his first four career features after several years of trying. He was trying for win number five and his first ever at the Proctor Speedway. Carlson got the jump from the outside of the front row and opened up a lead. Pole sitter George Ledin began to chase him down along with Tim McMann, Todd Gehl, Don Copp and Cory Jorgenson. Gehl worked his way to second but the caution flag flew when John Massingill flew off turn one. With 13 laps remaining at the green flag Carlson led Ledin, McMann, Gehl and Copp until Massingill took his second trip off the track in the same place with nine laps remaining. At the green Carlson had lots of company as Ledin tried to take the lead and got into the side of Carlson who suffered damage and retired form competition. McMann then took over the lead but lost it to Gehl who went on to take his second win of the season. Harry Hanson also dropped out of competition but had already taken the Late Model track championship. In the WISSOTA Modified feature it was all Jayme Lautigar as he jumped to the lead from the outside of the front row and led every lap for his first feature win of the season. Duane Dale quickly moved into the runner up spot where he finished ahead of Kelly Estey, Jad Carlson and Ryan Aho in the top five. Lautigar dominated the flag to flag event which featured little passing. Estey's third place finish cemented his claim on the 2009 track Modified championship.
