Knauf, Lawrence, Marshall Slip Through for ABC Opener Wins PDF Print E-mail

by Nick Gima
 Ashland, WI, May 15

-- Paul Knauf made a rare visit to the ABC Raceway payoff by winning a thrilling side-by-side battle with Duane Dale for his second career WISSOTA modified feature victory here, capping off opening-night action presented by Northern State Bank on Saturday.
In other AmsOil Dirt Track Series feature action, Scott Lawrence and Jeff Marshall made late-races passes for wins, while Greg Jaeger’s patience paid off and Chad Carlson’s station wagon ran strong. A field of 102 cars registered at the gate to compete in front of a crowd that exceeded 1,400.
Knauf, who traveled from Marshfield to perform, worked past polesitter Steve Lavasseur three laps in to the 20-lap main event for second spot and set his sights on surprise leader Steve Stuart, who is the track’s two-time defending WISSOTA Midwest modified champion but was in his first feature in the big mods on his home track. Stuart had built up a nearly one-second lead early, but Knauf cut into that lead by about a tenth of a second a lap, with Dale in tow.
Knauf’s big break came on lap 11, when Lavasseur and Wayne Stricker tangled while battling for sixth. Taking advantage of the Delaware double-file restart, Dale snuck inside on Stuart for the lead, and Knauf did likewise to take second. Knauf then ran around the top of the red-clay oval, while Dale hugged the bottom, and the two ran the final four laps door-to-door, swapping the point, until Knauf finally edged ahead for good at the white flag.
Knauf’s car-length win over Dale was a ways ahead of a strong run by Stricker, who edged Stuart at the stripe for third. Bill Byholm started 13th but charged to fifth at the finish.
Lawrence, from Superior, coming off his sixth-straight WISSOTA super stock track title here, also needed some late-race heroics to come away with his 42nd career ABC feature win. Polesitter Ken Truscott pulled away on each of three different attempts to start the 20-lap run, but messes made behind him kept bringing the field back to him.
On the third attempt Lawrence and Eric Olson each used inside moves to slip past Dave Flynn for second and third, and Olson took the runner-up spot away from Lawrence on lap 2. The lead dozen or so began to spread out around the oval as the race ran off non-stop for 15 laps, with the best battle on track waged between Randy Spacek and Flynn for fourth, while Truscott quickly reeled in the backmarkers.
Truscott himself brought about the heartbreaking caution that changed the complexion of the race, when his mount gave up on him with five to go. Olson found himself on the point for the restart, and Lawrence took a look to the inside groove and made his move on lap 17, when Olson bobbled ever so little coming out of Turn 4.
Lawrence held on from there to win by a couple of lengths ahead of Olson. Spacek, who was in position to overtake Olson going into the final corner, suffered a steering failure and slipped up the track; thirteenth-starting Brian Mikkonen barely avoided heavy contact and came home third, just ahead of a strong run by rookie Cory Casari and Flynn.
Like Lawrence, Thunder Bay, ON’s Jeff Marshall took advantage for a minor mistake by Mickey Nosser to take second place, and then, like Knauf, he dueled with fellow Canadian Kevin Monteith for the win in the 15-lap WISSOTA Mid-mod A-main. Nosser set the early pace from his outside-front-row starting spot and continued to do so despite several early restarts, while Taylor Leuthner and Marshall worked their way into second and third, respectively, by lap 4.
Marshall took over runner-up duties on lap 5 but was a distance back of the leader, while Monteith followed through to third two loops later. After George Dalbeck’s car slowed on lap 9 to bring about a caution flag, Nosser lost the handle on his ride ever so slightly a lap after the restart, but it was just enough to move the high-side-running Marshall up the track and open the bottom lane up for Monteith to take the lead.
With four laps left Dan Kingsley’s car began throwing sparks, and when he pulled to the bottom of the track to exit the race he took Travis Nye with him, causing Nye to spin and the yellow lights to come on. Marshall spent the remaining laps looking for an inside move to get by Monteith, and he found it on the final lap for his second career win here and first in three summers. Nosser also had enough for one last push, and he, too, edged past Monteith at the checkers.
Leuthner was not too far back in fourth, and Rick Przybylski, who had to come through the B-feature to make the show and started 20th, claimed fifth.
Jaeger, the former track champ from Mellen, used a veteran level of patience as much of the field of youngsters in the six-cylinder 15-lap feature beat and battered each other out of contention. Neil Adamczak bested the field out of the first turn to take the early lead, and after a quick caution stop for a Jim Anderson spin, Jaeger worked inside to get by Tyler Luger for second.
Jaeger dug hard to catch and eventually overtake the young Adamczak on lap 7, but sophomore driver Tyler Hudack’s spin negated the pass for the lead. Then, just as Jaeger was gearing himself up to try the pass again, Adamczak pulled off the track with a flat tire, putting Jaeger at the point for the restart.
From there a series of stoppages for various spins and crashes slowed the pace at a frustrating crawl, but Jaeger kept his cool, and when the time limit had expired and there were still four laps remaining coming out of yet another restart, officials called for a green-white-checkered finish, which Jaeger paced to the end. Scott Ovaska started 18th on the 21-car grid but took advantage of the carnage ahead of him to claim second, while Anderson, 15th-starting Chuck Hawkinson and 16th-starting Forrest Schultz completed the top five.
Carlson, from Superior, got around Ken Tody Jr during the back half of the 12-lap pure stock run to earn his opening night win. Tody beat visiting Keith Troutman out of the first corner to set the early pace, while Al Rapp moved into second just before Paul Milanowski’s motor blew apart on lap 2.
Tody, Rapp, Carlson and his brother and 2009 co-champ Tim pulled away from the rest of the field to decide the win, and when Rapp’s car got away from him for a moment Chad Carlson was there to take advantage for second. A lap 6 caution for Caitlyn Carlson’s stalled ride set up Chad Carlson’s pass of Tody for the lead a lap after the restart, and from there Carlson held a small but safe lead to the checkers. Tody, Rapp and Tim Carlson followed, with last year’s other champ, Tim Carbon, taking over fifth for good with four to go.
Next Saturday the ABC Raceway will present a full five-division program presented by the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce, with hot laps set for 6:15 pm and racing starting at 7. “Racenight” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates.

ABC Raceway Kicks Off ‘10 Campaign on Saturday PDF Print E-mail
by Nick Gima
 Ashland, WI
-- The 2010 edition of the ABC Raceway’s stock car racing season will begin on Saturday, May 15, with the Northern State Bank Season Opener.
A full schedule of action in the WISSOTA-sanctioned modified, super stock and Midwest modified divisions, as well as the Raceway’s own six-cylinder and pure stock classes, is set each of the next 16 Saturday nights this summer.
Fans and drivers visiting the three-eighths-mile red-clay oval this season will notice improvements to the racing surface, including a significant reworking of the track’s banked turns and upgrades in the track’s safety lighting.
Another important change will be the use of Raceceiver radio systems in the WISSOTA-sanctioned divisions, which will allow race officials to communicate with the drivers during cautions and restarts. This in turn will offer a faster-paced program for the fans’ entertainment.
Championship points battles in all five divisions will start right from night one and should be very intriguing to watch. Duane Dale of Aurora, MN, won his first career track title last August in the modifieds at Ashland, but a tight work schedule to start the summer may put him off the pace to repeat early on, meaning that division’s top trophy may be up for grabs.
Superior’s Scott Lawrence will be back to attempt something that no driver has ever done at Ashland, and very few have done at any track - win a seventh consecutive track championship. Lawrence won his “one for the other thumb” in the super stocks last year, and in doing earned a track-record ninth overall.
Steve Stuart of Ashland has moved up into the big mods for the 2010 campaign, thus offering up the Midwest mod title to the field. In two seasons of Mid-mod racing here, Stuart is the track’s only points champ.
Dale Coddington of Hayward collected his first-ever track championship here in the six-cylinder class, and he is expected to return to defend that title in a division that will see a lot of new faces as well as some stiff competition.
The pure stock championship was one of the most hotly-contested here in ‘09, and the tie between Superior’s Tim Carlson and Tim Carbon of Highbridge was proof positive of that. Last year the top six drivers were separated by only 12 points.
The grandstand gates will open at 5 pm, and fans can sign up for reserved seats at the main ticket window every race night starting Saturday. Pit gates will open earlier than normal at 4 pm Saturday, allowing drivers to take care of such administrative issues as paying for pit spots and licenses, signing up for Raceceivers and transponders, etc.
Hot laps will get underway promptly at 6:15, and the first green flag of the season is set to waive at 7 pm.
Prior to Saturday’s race program, “Racenight” will air live with up-to-date track news and weather information on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, from 4:30-6 pm. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, <www.abcraceway.com>.

Spacek, Eder, Myers, Kallas, Coddington, Carlson Collect Bonus Bucks at ABC PDF Print E-mail

by Nick Gima

 Ashland, WI, August 8
-- A season-high 115 cars entered the back gate at the ABC Raceway Saturday night and received a pleasant surprise - a huge purse boost from program sponsor Rivord Trucking and Birchgrove Campground.
As a result, Jeff Spacek took home $1,100 as the winner of the AmsOil Dirt Track Series program’s WISSOTA modified feature, while Kevin Eder, Curt Myers, John Kallas, Dale Coddington and Chad Carlson, among several others, also benefitted from the generosity.
Each feature winner’s check was dramatically increased, and select other finishing positions received bonus monies. Fans also received various gifts on giveaways, and two young fans took home new bikes.
Spacek, the 2008 track champ from Phillips, started the 20-lap mod headliner from the inside of row 3, as Steve Lavasseur slipped from the second row around polesitter Wayne Stricker for the initial lead. A five-car mess on lap 2 was an indicator of things to come throughout the first half of the event, as the pace was slowed considerably by caution flags.
On the restart Stricker, who was scored in second, was slow to fire and was overtaken by the entire field, forcing several drivers to check up. Destin Lorimor’s subsequent spin collected Kent Baxter and brought on the next yellow light, and Spacek took advantage of his positioning behind Lavasseur for that restart and worked inside for the lead.
Two Ross Lightner spins, a slowdown for debris, and another two-car tangle delayed Spacek’s getaway, but by lap 5 he had built up a five-car margin, while divisional points leader Duane Dale worked hard to get by Scott Hudack for third. A lap later Dale took second from Lavasseur, and for the remainder of the event Dale kept pace with Spacek but could not gain enough ground to challenge for the win.
Spacek crossed the line six lengths up on Dale, with Hudack getting by Lavasseur at mid-race for third. Byholm followed in fifth.
Ashland’s Eder came away with a thrilling win in the WISSOTA super stock 20-lapper, worth $900 thanks to the Rivord Trucking bonus. This race took several dramatic turns, as visiting Paul Erikson sped around polesitter Curt Myers for the early lead. Myers, driving Don Koivisto’s car on this night, stumbled coming out of turn 2 on lap 2, forcing all behind him to take evasive action. On the restart after Willie Johnsen’s spin, Erikson tripped on the same clump of dirt as Myers, dropping him from the top five and handing Eder the lead.
But a five-car collection negated the pass, putting Erikson back to the front for the restart. Eric Olson then used the outside line to slingshot around Eder and Erikson for the lead on lap 4, and a circuit later Scott Lawrence worked on Eder to take third.
Lawrence grabbed second away from Erikson on lap 7, just before Art Hyde spun to slow things down. Over the next six laps Lawrence threw everything he could at Olson, with the pair running side by side for a couple tours before Lawrence edged ahead on lap 14. On the next go-around the yellow lights came on for a Roy Pumala-Dave Elliott get-together, and that’s when Shane Kisling, who restarted fourth, swept around Eder and Olson and pulled up to Lawrence’s rear bumper.
Kisling moved outside on Lawrence after a lap 16 restart and the two came off turn 4 dead even, but Kisling got squeezed into the front-straight wall, badly damaging his car, and Lawrence was sent to the back for the incident. That put Olson in the lead once again, but on the white-flag lap Eder made a run to Olson’s outside, and at the line the nose of Eder’s car was a foot or so ahead of Olson’s - the official margin of victory was .057 seconds.
Brian Mikkonen, who started the race 12th and hung just outside of the top five for much of the run, came home third, just ahead of 13th-starting Ken Truscott and Mike Bellefeuille. Lawrence recovered to come home 12th, but his points lead was cut dramatically.
Myers’ win in the WISSOTA Midwest modified A-main was nowhere near as dramatic, as he again started on the pole but this time led flag to flag, maintaining through only two restarts for the $750 win. The former national champion from Cameron scooted away quickly to a ten-car lead over Rob Weber, who fought off a determined Travis Swanson for second during the first couple of laps. Joe Olson’s damaged ride ground to a stop to bring out the first caution flag on lap 2, but Myers again slipped away to a healthy cushion.
The order stayed fairly unchanged at the front, with only Mickey Nosser’s stopped car causing Myers any concern on lap 8. But over the last seven rounds Myers was easily the class of the field, coasting to a five-length win over Weber. Swanson endured a couple of late-race threats to secure a solid third-place effort, while Steve Stuart strengthened his points lead with a fourth-place run, just ahead of Mike Truscott.
Despite a thin field of WISSOTA street stocks, Kallas became the track’s leading feature winner of the season with his fourth win Saturday, and his 23rd overall in 2009. Kallas, of Hurley, worked outside on Dennis Groom for the initial lead, and that turned out to be as close as anyone could get.
Groom got one opportunity to restart on Kallas’ tail, on lap 6 when rookie Kyle Weber spun under the flagstand, but Kallas ran a smooth line to hold off any shots Groom might have taken. The pair were a distance up on Larry Haderly, who maintained his points lead, while Greg Kuklinski and visiting Jordan Kurtti followed at the final stripe.
Coddington recovered as well as one can after a disappointing result last weekend to come away with his first six-cylinder feature win since June of 2007. The popular Hayward veteran nearly suffered a second-straight disappointment early in the 15-lap headliner when he was spun by Warren Beede while the two battled for second behind outside front-row starter DeJay Mihalek. But on the redo Coddington worked inside on Mihalek patiently until he cleared the sophomore driver for the lead on lap 5.
Over a long green-flag run Coddington could not pull away, as Scott Ovaska and Greg Jaeger eventually drew up to his trunklid. Just as Ovaska was about to make a move for the win, a three-car tangle on the back straight forced a green-white-checkered finish, and Coddington held on as Ovaska spent the last two laps fending off the charging Jaeger. Neil Adamczak raced to fourth-place money ahead of points leader CJ Polacek.
Carlson returned to Ashland’s victory lane for the first time since May, but he needed a last-lap pass of Nathan Dees to do it in the pure stock feature. Dees was all set to run away with the night’s ten-lap finale, while points leader Austin Blom cut quickly through the field from his fourth-row starting spot to take over second by lap 2. But something broke on Blom’s car in turn 3 and he nearly rolled it, ending his night.
Carlson got by Joe Wolfe on the restart to claim second and chased down Dees, catching him at mid-race. On that lap second-in-points Tim Carbon dropped out of the race while running fourth, his car smoking badly. On the next go-around third-in-points Tim Carlson, driving Don Livingston’s car, spun into the infield, creating an opportunity for Chad Carlson.
The young man from Superior took a look outside on Dees with three laps left, and as the white flag came out Carlson was alongside. Carlson completed the pass coming out of turn 2 and held on for his third win this season. Wolfe was impressive with his third-place run, while Steve Christman was docked two spots for a jump on a restart, moving Ken Tody, Jr, to fourth and Jeff Christman to fifth.
This Saturday night will be the sixth annual Pure Excitement 25 pure stock special at the ABC Raceway, presented by the Ashland-Bayfield County Sportsman’s Club. A purse of over $4,000 is set for the entry-level division, with the winner taking home at least $500. All six divisions will again be in action.
Adult admission tickets are just $10, while kids ages 12 and under get in free with a paid adult admission. Hot laps are set for 6:15 pm, and racing will start at 7. “Racenight” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road.
